Motivation And Boys
Though boys continue to outnumber girls when it comes to participation in high school sports, they are greatly outnumbered in every other extracurricular activity, from student government to student newspapers and academic clubs, suggesting that boys are not as fully engaged in their high school experience.
The number of high school females taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams outstripped the number of males in 1987-women now account for more than 54% of those taking the AP exam, and the gap continues to grow.
By the end of the sophomore year of college, women are more likely than men to have a GPA greater than 3.00 or higher, while men are more likely to have a GPA of less than 2.50.
Boys' Achievement In Decline
Boys' academic achievement has been declining at an accelerating rate. The decline has been both relative to girls, whose achievement has been advancing, and in absolute terms.
Today, young men are less likely to attend and graduate from college than they were just a generation ago. With a shrinking manufacturing base, this leaves men with diminishing professional options. The consequences are beginning to be reflected in the economic data, exacerbated by the effects of Great Recession. That's why we focus on providing a college preparatory and globally focused educational experience to our young men. We believe being college ready and globally competent increases the likelihood of career success.
